Snieper-HimanMLPD currently utilizes one canine (K-9) officer in the patrol unit of the operations division.  K-9 Snieper, who is partnered with Ofc. Ben Himan, is a Belgian Malinois who was born in Holland.  Ofc. Himan and Snieper completed a six week initial training program at Shallow Creek Kennels in Sharpsville, PA prior to beginning their patrols in May 2013.  K-9 Snieper is certified through the Pennsylvania Police Work Dog Association and the North American Police Work Dog Association to perform narcotics detection, article searches, tracking and criminal apprehension.  In order to keep their skills sharp, Ofc. Himan and Snieper receive continuous training throughout the year.  In addition to enforcement duties, K-9 Snieper participates in the department’s outreach activities, including public demonstrations, foot patrols and neighborhood visits.

Police K-9s who have previously served MLPD and the community are:

K-9 Jerd – a Czech-born German shepherd, who served MLPD from August 1999 until December 2008 and was partnered with Cpl. Michael Belak.

K-9 Sundi – a Hungarian-born German shepherd, who served MLPD from October 2003 until September 2012 and was partnered with Ofc. Michael Smakosz.
