police August 9, 2013 News Comments Off

Microsoft ScamOver the past few months, several residents have reported that they received unsolicited phone calls from someone claiming to be from Microsoft Tech Support.  The caller usually states that you have some sort of virus or problem with your computer and they can assist you in repairing your device.

These calls are 100% fraudulent and these cybercriminals will attempt to trick you into installing malicious software onto your computer that could capture your sensitive data, such as online banking user names and passwords.  These scammers also have been known to attempt to take control of your computer remotely and adjust settings that leave your computer vulnerable.  They may request credit card information so they can bill you for phony services or direct you to fraudulent websites and ask you to enter credit card and other personal or financial information there.

According to Microsoft, their company DOES NOT make unsolicited phone calls (also known as cold calls) to charge you for computer security or software fixes.
